Here at our spa hotel in Worcestershire, we believe Mums deserve the best treatment in reward for all they do for us. With Mother’s Day just around the corner we delve into how the tradition of Mother’s Day came to be…

What is Mother’s Day?

Mothering Sunday is the traditional name for Mother’s day and is celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and families. Today, it is a day when children give flowers and presents to their mothers in order to show their love and gratitude towards them.

How did it all begin?

Mother’s Day dates back to England in the 1600s, when it was considered important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. Each year, in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their ‘mother’ church – the main church or cathedral of the area, which led to the tradition of children being given the day off to visit their mother and family. As they walked to the church, children would pick wildflowers or violets to give to their mothers.
