Gravy on a Fry-Up? Our Head Chef Shares Thoughts on Surprising British Breakfast Trend

Brits are seemingly embracing a new breakfast twist – gravy on a fry-up!

A recent study by Best Western Hotels, of which the Bank House Hotel, Spa & Golf Club is proud to be a Best Western Premier Collection Hotel, reveals some fascinating insights into the nation’s evolving breakfast habits. According to the research, one in 10 Brits consider gravy an essential addition to their cooked breakfast.

The study, which delved into the UK’s most-loved condiments, found that ketchup still holds the top spot as the nation’s favourite fry-up accompaniment, preferred by 25% of people. Surprisingly, unconventional choices such as sweet chilli sauce and horseradish (14%) outranked traditional brown sauce, which only 7% of respondents favoured. Meanwhile, gravy, mayonnaise, and hot honey were all popular options, cementing the growing trend of experimentation with breakfast flavours.

The findings have sparked plenty of conversation in the Bank House Hotel’s kitchen. Head Chef James Moss, who recently featured in Best Western’s campaign, shared his thoughts on the surprising trend.

“I’ve always believed food is about personal taste, and this study highlights just how adventurous people are becoming with their breakfasts,” said James. “Gravy on a fry-up isn’t something we’ve traditionally seen, and while it isn’t something I’d do… as a chef, I love the idea of mixing things up and challenging conventional pairings.”

The study also revealed broader shifts in breakfast habits, including where people eat their morning meal. From eating breakfast in bed (9%) to on the go (17%), and even at their desks (10%), it’s clear that convenience is playing an increasing role in how Brits start their day. But one thing remains certain: the traditional fry-up is here to stay, with two in five people enjoying one at least once a week.

Commenting on the enduring popularity of the classic cooked breakfast, James added: “At the Bank House Hotel, we’re proud to offer a breakfast experience that combines tradition with a modern twist. Whether you’re a fan of a full English or want to try something a little different, like adding gravy, that’s fine with us. Our goal is to cater to all tastes and ensure everyone starts their day with a meal they love.”

The study comes as Best Western crowns 2025 the “Year of the Free Breakfast,” with Rewards customers enjoying complimentary breakfasts when booking under the special ‘Free Breakfast’ rate.
