Valentine’s traditions from around the world

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and what better way to treat your significant other than to a romantic meal, an evening getaway or both at our spa hotel in Worcester!

Valentine’s Day is a celebration; the perfect time where appreciation can be shown to the ones we love. This is usually done with an exchange of cards or gifts accompanied by a romantic meal. This particular day has roots which date back centuries so it is no surprise that the 14th February has stood the test of time. Not every country celebrates the most romantic day of the year in the same way…

China

Chinese couples visit the temple of Match Maker, to pray for love and happiness with hope of future marriage. Single people too, pay a visit to the temple and ask for their luck in love. Much easier than attending a speed dating event, we’re sure!

Argentina

The Argentinians embrace the tradition by celebrating for an entire week.  In addition to February the 14th, they set aside seven days in July for Sweetness Week. From the 13th-20th February lovers will exchange candles and kisses with the person who means the most to them.

Italy

The Italians go all out when celebrating the day of love, by organising a spring festival.  Couples get together to enjoy music, poetry and exchange gifts like the “Baci Perugina”; a box of small hazelnut-filled chocolate “kisses”. This box will be accompanied with a romantic quote printed in four languages. According to old tradition, the first man a girl sees that day will become her husband and they would be married within a year!

Finland

Finland doesn’t adopt the traditional methods of emphasising romance, instead they celebrate friendship between close friends by sending cards and gifts to each other as a token of their kindness and goodwill.  Although Finnish people celebrate friends day, the 14th February is a popular day for couples to become engaged or even married.
