Where did Mother’s Day come from and why do we celebrate it?

There surely won’t be many people who wonder why we celebrate Mother’s Day… it’s pretty accurate to say that without them, none of us would be here. But the question of where did Mother’s Day come from and its origins are far more frequently raised.

Like most of these holidays, Mothering Sunday has religious connotations, but not actually relating to that wonderful lady that brought us into the world. In the 17th century, it was introduced on the fourth Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter), and was when people would visit their “Mother” church.

A “Mother” Church, a term that represents the Christian Church as a mother in protecting her believers, would most likely have been a church or cathedral where one was baptised or is most local.

However, by the early 20th century, this tradition had lapsed somewhat and an effort to revive it by Anna Jarvis, a Vicar’s daughter from Nottinghamshire, saw the start of it being celebrated again.

Coupled with the first World War when so many mothers were left without sons, popularity increased that by the 1950s, with the help of modern-day commercialisation, it was on every calendar and celebrated ‘religiously’ throughout the UK.
